Introduction to Kromasil Chiral coated phases

“Kromasil ® CelluCoat™ stretches the limits for analytical and industrial chiral chromatography.”

Separation Products has developed Kromasil CelluCoat to meet an increasing demand of stationary phases with a wide chiral discrimination ability and as a complement of the Kromasil Chiral phases DMB and TBB.

The silica

The matrix is a super wide pore silica specially designed to provide the best performance for chiral chromatography applications. Compared to other Kromasil products, this silica has a low surface area. This reduces the number of achiral interaction sites, and thus, increases the chiral selectivity. Also, the silica is available in small particle sizes, down to 3 µm of diameter, which gives high efficiency and high resolution.

The pore size distribution is optimized for the best mechanical strength. Consequently CelluCoat can withstand pressures up to 400 bar, which gives a free working range in most  commercial HPLC systems. This allows high-speed analysis with reduced cycle time compared to traditional adsorbed polysaccharide phases.

The chiral selector

The super wide pore silica is modified with tris-(3,5-dimethylphenyl)carbamoyl cellulose (figure 2). This selector is well-known for it's wide range in chiral chromatography. The selector is applied on the silica using a specially designed coating technology, which ensures homogenous distribution of the selector.
