Outstanding properties for the most exacting demands

Kromasil silica packing materials are designed to meet the most exacting demands in HPLC, SMB and SFC, from analytical to process scale. The uniqueness of Kromasil high performance spherical silica is the combination of high surface area and mechanical strength. Other outstanding properties are chemical purity, chemical stability, optimized surface properties and a well-defined pore structure.

Leveraging the productivity with Kromasil

When substances are purified in industrial-scale HPLC, the packing material normally accounts for about 5-10 per cent of the total separation cost.

However, the impact of using a premium-brand packing material can be great, and lead to substantial savings in total separation cost.

Typical breakdown of total separation cost

The available surface area* for Kromasil is higher than for most brands, resulting in higher loadability and a reduced total separation cost. This is due to the fact that the amount purified in each cycle can be increased, while the separation cost is kept essentially constant.

For some applications, and certain competing brands, the gain in production rate can be more than doubled.

As we have seen, the packing material accounts for a small part of the total separation cost. However, choosing the right brand can have a substantial effect on the result.

When choosing a premium brand such as Kromasil, the packing cost is increased marginally, but this is in turn heavily outweighed by the gain in productivity, which leads to a reduction in total separation cost.

Additionally, due to the chemical and mechanical stability of Kromasil, the packing will last longer than most conventional materials, also contributing to a lower packing cost per gram of produced substance.

Tools and experience for optimizing the running conditions of the production

Kromasil has developed a tool that helps you optimize the running conditions of your production. This tool is called KromaGuide.

The way it works is simple. We take the data obtained from a few analytical-scale experiments and plug them into a computer with KromaGuide installed. Then we enter separation cost factors such as solvent, equipment and so on. KromaGuide then helps you predict your optimal running conditions, such as loading, column dimensions, flow rate and particle size.

With KromaGuide, it is possible to perform multi-dimensional optimization of your chromatography. Testing and comparison of varying conditions is a tedious task to perform in practice. With KromaGuide this can be done in minutes.
